We ran into a group of headbanded craft beer fans at the Firestone Walker Brewing Festival who said they were from Boonville, Calif., and that we had to get up north for the next Boonville Beer Festival.

They said the Firestone event was right up there, but if we wanted something even funkier Boonville was the place.

What would you expect from a region who's hometown brew features a bear with antlers on the label? And fans who ran around FWIBF with head and wristbands?

After hanging with that crazy group and enjoying a few AVBC beers, it's safe to say we'll be in Boonville next year.

In honor of Boonville this Father's Day, my two year old son (fake ID?) bought me a sixer of Anderson Valley Brewing Company's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout.

And it didn't disappoint. This classic was dark as used oil on the pour, with a thick tan head and a whiff of coffee on the nose, and a chocolatey, toffee like stout taste down the hatch.

Boonville style baby.

  • Hey hey hey...those guys were right! You definitely should come to our 17th Annual Boonville Brewfest on May 4th, 2013! It will be our 25th Anniversary, so it's a once-in-a-lifetime event (coincidentally, that Talking Heads song is playing RIGHT NOW, so there is something weird going on...) Sounds like your Father's Day was great, and thanks for sharing your review on the Barney Flats!

    Cheers and Bahl Hornin',
