When we asked the guys at Firestone Walker what the hot batch was this weekend, their reply over Twitter was a bit surprising:

"@BeerHyped Woooookey Jack!!! Unfiltered Black Rye IPA, get some!"

Wookey Jack?!?! Being I live within a growler's throw of their Paso Robles brewery, I was both disappointed and thrilled that I hadn't heard about their new Black Rye IPA.

How did this self-proclaimed dark and IPA die-hard miss the memo on the Wookey Jack?

So within minutes of the Tweet, we were down at Firestone with our growlers in hand.

And the Wookey didn't disappoint.

At 8.5% it's a strong batch. And this heady brew is definitely dark as you can see by the photo. You have to be impressed by a beer that's darker than the growler it came in -- so dark you can't see through a glass of it.

When asked by a friend how I'd describe it, I noted, "It's as if Velvet Merlin and Union Jack had a love child."

I just hope Firestone decides to adopt this seasonal child o' mine and welcomes it into its fine family of craft beers full-time.
